Room Spray Base Showdown: 8 Top Picks for Candle & Body Product Makers

Room sprays are having a major moment—and for good reason. They’re the perfect way to expand your candle line and let your customers enjoy their favorite scents without committing to a full-burn session.
So, I tested eight room spray bases to see which ones actually perform and which ones fall flat. Below, I break down pricing, ingredients, scent retention, and overall usability—plus tips for testing room sprays and how to perfume your space the right way.
🔥 The Flaming Candle – Linen & Room Spray Base
-
Price: $5.67/lb
-
Key Ingredients: Water, unknown surfactant, isopropyl alcohol, dipropylene glycol
-
Verdict: Fail
This one gelled up badly after sitting out for a bit (my fault), but the strong alcohol smell and poor spray performance were deal-breakers. It clogged the bottle and left my hands feeling dry and tight. Not recommended for linen use—or really at all.
🌲 Northwood Distributing – Body & Room Spray Base
-
Price: $12.93/lb (Shop - $10 OFF with code "couture10")
-
Transparency: Proprietary blend, but SDS reveals some alcohol-based solvents
-
Verdict: Good
Despite the mystery ingredients, it mixed well and sprayed beautifully with no residue. Slight alcohol scent on the first spray, but solid overall performance and scent retention.
🇺🇸 Ohio Fragrance Co. – Room Spray Sample
-
Sample Price: $4.39 (3.5 oz)
-
Verdict: Just OK
No ingredient transparency (the website was down at the time), and it left a visible white film behind when sprayed. Alcohol smell was noticeable. Not my favorite in terms of dry-down or performance.
🍑 Peach State Candle & Fragrance Co. – Room/Body Spray Base
-
Price: $7.50/lb
-
Key Ingredients: Water, SD alcohol, propylene glycol, methyl glucose ether, glycerin
-
Verdict: Solid Choice (but see update below)
I've used this as both a room and body spray. It performs well on skin (non-irritating, soft dry-down) and in the air. It sprays cleanly, leaves no residue, and holds fragrance beautifully.
UPDATE: Peach State reformulated its base in early August 2024. The version I tested in the video is the OG formula. Some kind folks have sent me some testers, and it smells like alcohol and doesn’t 💯 dissipate. Please do your own testing!
🌿 Makesy Organic Wildcrafted Witch Hazel (multi-purpose)
-
Price: $15.95/16 oz (Shop - 10% OFF with code "Couture10")
-
Ingredients: Organic witch hazel, organic non-GMO grain alcohol
-
Verdict: Great for Multi-Use - you can use as a room spray base, body spray base, linen spray base and more. It's a 100% natural, sustainable, and organic base made from 14% alcohol and 86% wildcrafted witch hazel
You can use as a room spray base, body spray base, linen spray base and more. It's a 100% natural, sustainable, and organic base made from 14% alcohol and 86% wildcrafted witch hazel. Super clean and versatile. On the pricier side, but worth it if you're looking for a multi-use product.
🌾 Midwest Fragrance Company – Room Spray Base
-
Price: $7.99/lb
-
Ingredients: Proprietary blend with reverse osmosis water, surfactants, solvents, vanillin
-
Verdict: Not a Fan
While the formula might be optimized for bakery-type scents, it left a film on hard surfaces and made my linens feel crunchy. The dry-down is odd and not suitable for soft furnishings.
⚠️ NOTE: On hardwood floors, this was an absolute fail. My husband nearly broke his neck slipping on the floor after I sprayed this. Please test with caution, especially around smooth surfaces.
🚛 Deep South Fragrance – Room Spray Base
-
Price: $15.97/32 oz
-
Key Ingredients: SD alcohol, water, glycerin, propylene glycol
-
Verdict: Excellent (If You Can Wait)
Amazing scent retention, no sticky residue, and it performs well on fabrics and furniture. Downside? Shipping is notoriously slow (weeks to months to receive). Pro tip: order through Faire for faster delivery (~10 days).
🍯 Hive & Honey – Room & Body Spray Base
-
Price: $10/lb (Shop)
-
Key Ingredients: SD alcohol, water, glycerin, methyl glucose ether, plant-based propylene glycol
-
Verdict: My Top Pick
Clean formula, sprays beautifully, leaves no residue, and is safe for the skin. I use 5–7% fragrance load for room spray, depending on the oi, though 5% is the sweet spot. Comparable to Deep South and Peach State but more accessible and easier to source consistently.
💡 How to Properly Perfume Your Space for Longevity
Here’s how I use and test room spray bases to make sure they last:
-
Spray the base of fabric items (curtains, cloth bed frame, couch)
-
Check every hour to assess longevity.
-
Avoid just spraying the air—it doesn’t cling and will dissipate quickly.
-
Test small inconspicuous areas for residue on wood and linen surfaces.
🎬 Final Thoughts
My personal favorite is Hive & Honey’s base—it delivers in every category. Deep South is a solid runner-up. Northwood held its own, too, especially for room-only applications.
